Consortium between three specialized Swiss laboratories
The idea of optimizing the existing means of identification and authentication, and of providing more security for developing processed biometric data. The IT departments in collaboration with the CTI developed a new product in 2013 and created the company Global ID in 2015.
The main objective of Global ID is to bring to market an innovative new technology to reliably identify people using 3D biometric finger vein data. The new technology addresses the main drawbacks of current technologies, namely reliability, robustness and high cost. The team draws on years of research at Swiss universities in biometrics and adding knowledge to do business in the developing world, to create a very interesting proposition.
Biometrics are the solution because they allow the authentication of an individual by a unique physical feature, effectively like a unique key we each possess. But using biometrics raises the question of the unwilling capture of such a key.
For obvious reasons of privacy and identity protection, biometrics must use a physical feature that is not continuously dispersed and replicated, such as fingerprints, DNA, and face, which are fine for criminal investigations but are not ethical for everyday use. Consumers and citizen must be able to exercise control on when their biometrics are captured.
To satisfy these legitimate needs, Global ID provides authentication technology based on invisible keys that can only be used explicitly: multi-views of finger veins, hidden and obtainable only with the knowledge of the individual. Multi-views also allow for both anti-spoofing and for very high unicity, thereby scaling security to international level. Authenticity is also protected throughout life because vein networks are stable through age.
